Kawerau Markets

The Kawerau markets run the first Thursday of every month and are a great place to buy fresh fruit and vegetables, grown plants, handmade goods & crafts, freshly cooked food and general nick knacks.

Hike up Mount Putauaki (Mount Edgecumbe)

Enjoy this day hike up Mount Putauaki (Mount Edgecumbe) which is a significant local icon of culture and history. Allow 3-4 hours to the summit where you will see spectacular views of the entire region of the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

A permit is required for this walk and is readily obtained from Maori Investments House, Waterhouse Street, during the week.

Mill & Wetland Tours

There are three tours available, a Walking Tour, a Bus/Vehicle Tour and The Mill Tour. Find out the process from forest to finished product.A tour of the giant Norske Skog Tasman/Carter Holt Harvey Mills can be arranged by phoning the Mill on (07) 323 3999.

These tours are fully guided and take approximately two hours.

Kawerau Swimming Pools

Kawerau has a free, thermally heated swimming pool complex. The complex has a large outdoor recreation and play area, with BBQ facilities and picnic tables which are available for families and larger groups. Recently upgraded to include a large communal spa with fountains.The pools are located on Plunket Street, next to the Kawerau Bowling Club.

Camping at Lake Tarawera

This is a very popular camping area accessible by vehicle through Kawerau. A permit is required and can be obtained from the Kawerau Information Center on Plunket Street.
Lake Rotoma

A mere 10 minutes drive from Kawerau, this is a very popular family recreation area of the locals. Enjoy numerous water sports like swimming, kayaking and wake boarding. BBQ & toilet facilities are available to the public.
